A minor achievement. Us volunteers have been slogging away at the gargantuan task of sorting out bags of flot. Flot is a soil sample which needs examination for small fragments of bone, flint, shell and pottery. There were 10,000 bags of flot that needed sorting out lurking around outside the dig house.  We finally did it! Yay!! Collective group hug and cheer, happy happy glad glad that those bloody bags were out of our lives, then off to the trenches.

I spent the period before lunch trowelling back soil to find out if mudbricks or a foundation trench were under there.

‘Margaret, can you see anything there?’

‘What the?? You’re asking me? I’me a bloody volunteer!!!’

‘Well, any sign of a foundation trench?’

‘Matt, what I know about foundation trenches would fit on the top of a very small matchbox’
