Friday 23 January

Another day trip today, to the Dead Sea and Madaba. The Dead Sea is obviously so named because of all the ways you could end up dead if you drank from it. Uuuuuuuuurgggghh.

Then to Mt Nebo, supposedly the site from which Moses viewed the Promised Land before his death. Apparently Mt Nebo can be quite spectacular particularly after it rains and vegetation has had a chance to grow, but because this wasn’t the case when I saw it, it really was hard to see what all the fuss was about. If I were Moses I probably would have said something like ‘Is THIS what you dragged us all the way here for? You can bloody well have it back!’

In fairness, this area apparently used to be forested, but environmental degradation issues in the Levant kicked off in Roman times and culminated with the Ottoman Empire when loads of trees were cut down for the railways. A bit of a warning for Australia.
